Marvelous Scenery with Thousands of Herons

Thousands herons create marvelous scenery on the mountain in Seongga Village in Imsil-eup. Protected as a Natural Monument designated by the Korean government, herons flock to this site every early spring and leave in autumn. The herons settle in the pine forest of over 16,000m2 reminescent of a fairy land. So, foreigners, as well as Koreans flock from all over the world to this place with cameras to take pictures of herons. Herons started to flock to this place since Jin Jae-hwang, the man of fortune in this district, planted 42 lacebark pine trees and zelcova trees in the late Joseon period and the forest was formed. About 4,000 herons visited about 10 years ago, but the number of herons has been decreasing. Nowadays, about 500 herons come to this habitat for migratory birds.
