Period History
Three Han States Period
  • Imsil belonged to the Mahan State, as New Wunsin State (臣雲國).(『History of Imsilgun』, 1977).
Three States Period
  • Imsil was Inghil-gun (仍肹郡)’ in Baekje (including Geosamul-hyeon and Madol-hyeon according to 『Geography of Korea』). (『Geography Vol. 3, Historical Record of the Three Kingdoms (三國史記 地理3)』)
Unified Silla Period
  • Imsil-gun belonged to Namwon-bu (南原府).
  • Inghil-gun was renamed Imsil-gun in 759 (the 16th year of King Gyeongdeok’s reign). Geosamul-hyeon and Madol-hyeon were renamed Cheongwung-hyeon and Maryeong-hyeon, respectively.
  • Sang-eam (上耳庵) Temple was built in 875 (the first year of King Heongang’s reign).
  • King Taejo Wang Geon (17 years old) prayed in Sang-eam and left ‘Hwanhuidam’ in 894.
  • Jingusa Temple was built in around the 7th century.
  • Imsil Jingusa Temple Site Stone Pagoda was bulit from the 8th to 9th century. (珍丘寺址石燈, Treasure No. 267)
  • Imsil Yongsam-ri Temple Site Stone Vairocana Buddha was made from the 8th to 9th century. (Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 82)
Goryeo Period
  • Imsil-gun was established in Jeonju-mok, Jeolla-do in 983.
  • The Tale on the Dog of the Osu Spread was made in 1250. (『Collection to Relieve Idleness』 by Choi Ja).
  • King Taejo Yi Seonggye of Joseon prayed in Sang-eam Temple in 1380 and left Samcheongdong Monument. (Imsil-gun Local Cultural Heritage Monument No. 2)
  • Hakjeong-ri Stone Buddha was made in the late Goryeo period. (Provincial Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 87)
  • Osu-ri Stone Buddha was made in late the Goryeo period. (Provincial Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 86)
  • Okjeongam Temple Site, Seated Stone Buddha carved in a cliff was made in the late Goryeo period. (Imsil-gun Local Cultural Heritage Monument No. 5)
Joseon Period
  • Imsil-gun (任實郡) was renamed to Imsil-hyeon (任實縣) in 1413 (the 13th year of King Taejong’s reign).
  • Several Confucian cultural relics were built including Imsil Confucian schools (任實鄕校) and private Confucian academies.
  • Imsil-hyeon was reorganized as Imsil-gun in 1895.- Development of the West District Farmers’ Music of the Southwestern Region due to the agriculture-focused industry.
1906 (Great Korean Empire)
  • 24 myeons, 359 ris
  • WIth the geographical arrangement and reorganization of administrative districts in 1906, 6 bangs from Namwon-bu were incorporated into Imsil-gun. (Dundeok-bang, Malcheon-bang, Oji-bang, Seokhyeon-bang, Asan-bang and Yeonggye-bang which were included in Namwon-gun)
Apr. 1, 1914 (Japanese Colonial Era)
  • 12 myeons, 130 ris
  • Sangdong-myeong and Hadong-myeon were integrated into Seongsu-myeon, Nam-myeon and Dunnam-myeon were integrated into Dundeok-myeon, Sindeok-myeon and a part of Wonsin-myeon were integrated into Sindeok-myeon, Oji-myeon, Seokhyeon-myeon and Asan-myeon were integrated into Samgye-myeon, and Sangbuk-myeon and Habuk-myeon were integrated into Ocheon-myeon.
  • Yeonggye-myeon in Imsil-gun was incorporated into Sunchang-gun.
1920
  • Imsil-gun government office was built (on the former government building site).
Mar. 1, 1935
  • Ocheon-myeon was renamed to Gwanchon-myeon.
Jul. 5, 1965
  • 12 myeons, 1 branch office, 130 ris. Hawunam Branch Office was established in Wunam-myeon in accordance with Provincial Ordinance No. 91 (promulgated on Jul. 5, 1965)
1967
  • Imsil-gun Government Office was moved (390, Ido-ri)
May 1, 1979
  • 1 eup, 11 myeons, 1 branch office, 130 ris. Imsil-myeon was promoted to Imsil-eup in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 9409 (promulgated on Apr. 7, 1979)
Feb.15, 1983
  • 1 eup, 11 myeons, 1 branch office, 131 ris. Geumam-ri, Deokgwa-myeon, Namwon-gun were incorporated into Dunnam-myeon in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 11027 (promulgated on Jul. 10, 1983)
Jan. 1, 1987
  • 1 eup, 11 myeons, 1 branch office, 131 ris. Jongseong 3-ri, Sannae-myeon, Jeongeup-gun was incorporated into Yongsu-ri, Gangjin-myeon, Imsil-gun in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 12007 (promulgated on Dec. 23, 1986).
Apr. 1, 1990
  • Geumseong-ri, Gwanchon-myeon was incorporated into Imsil-eup in accordance with the reorganization of administrative districts.
Aug. 10, 1992
  • Dunnam-myeon was renamed to Osu-myeon.
Dec. 12, 1994
  • Sinjeong-ri and Manjeong-ri, Samgye-myeon were incorporated into Imsil-eup in accordance with the reorganization of administrative districts.
2010
  • Imsil-gun Government Office moved into the new government building (30, Sujeong-ro).
